You’ve accomplished so much. You brought a beautiful new human into the world and learned how to take care of him or her. There have been sleepless nights and times when you have no idea what you’re doing. You’ve missed a few showers and perhaps your face hasn’t seen makeup in weeks (or even months). But guess what? You are rocking it, mama. Your baby is loved and cared for, and that is the most important thing in the world.

And that’s what this holiday is all about: honoring moms and all they do for their families. Now, this post is really more for your hubby than it is for you (sorry). Chances are, he’s a little stressed about this Mother’s Day because he wants to show you how much you’re loved and appreciated for being mom to his baby, but he’s not quite sure how. If he needs a little nudge in the right direction, you can always just leave this post about Mother’s Day gift ideas open on your computer where he’ll just happen to see it (*wink, wink*).

Dad, check out this list of simple Mother’s Day gift ideas for your wife that will make her feel special and celebrate her entrance into motherhood.

1. Stuff with baby’s hand prints/footprints

Mamas love (love) their babies’ little hands and feet. We can’t get enough of kissing those tiny fingers and toes. Personally, I shed real tears thinking about Little Man’s growing feet. They’re so much bigger now than when he was first born.

One of the best gifts a first-time mom can receive is a way to remember her little one’s tiny digits. There are so many items to print baby’s footprints and hand prints on. Tea towels are one of my favorites (get plain white tea towels and dip baby’s feet in acrylic paint), but others include picture frames, coffee mugs, t-shirts, homemade cards.

2. Plants and flowering shrubs

If mama has a green thumb, a plant is one of the best Mother’s Day gift ideas. It’s better than flowers because it will (hopefully) last a lot longer. Plants are a great representation of her growing baby, so try to get something that will last through the years.

Rose bushes are great because they last forever with care and produce beautiful flowers that she can enjoy every spring and summer. Other flowering shrubs include gardenias, hydrangeas, and wisteria. Or, give her bulbs like tulips or daffodils that will brighten the yard year after year.

3. Spa day or spa set

Just a head’s up, Dad, your wife probably hasn’t had a lot of time to pamper herself lately. She’s been running around rocking that mom bun and smelling like spit-up and baby poop. Give her a chance to feel more like herself with a spa day.

Massages, facials, manicures/pedicures, and skin treatments are all great ways to help her relax. But if it’s not in the budget (new babies are expensive!), she’ll also appreciate a nice foot soak and foot rub from her main man. Gift her a cute nail polish for her toes and some yummy-smelling foot cream, and she will love you forever.

4. A journal or planner with pretty pens

Is mama a creative who loves to journal? Surprise her with a new place to record her thoughts and memories of you and baby. I have this amazing Q&A journal for moms, and I love it!

It’s a five-year motherhood journal that has places for quick little thoughts and memories. If she’s already up to her eyeballs in notebooks because she’s a journal addict (like me), maybe get her a cute planner to help her stay organized as she manages the family’s busy schedules.

5. Breakfast in bed

Now, I know breakfast in bed is on many Mother’s Day gift ideas lists, and some moms hate it because it can come with a mess. But if you do it right, she will love it. Don’t make her feel like she has to come behind you and clean up the kitchen.

And it really doesn’t have to be anything fancy. She’ll be happy with some bacon and eggs, coffee or juice, and maybe something sweet (avoid cold cereal because she’s probably been eating her fair share of that since baby was born). You can even go the extra mile and add a little vase with fresh flowers to the tray.

6. A nap (or two)

Dad, we know you experienced your share of sleep deprivation with the arrival of your little one, so you can imagine how much your wife would value an uninterrupted nap (oh, and guess what? A nap is on the list of Father’s Day gift ideas, too). My advice is take the baby out of the house and let mama rest undisturbed. I can tell you she will be eternally grateful for a little shut-eye.

7. A new devotional or book about motherhood

This is a great option if your wife loves to read. You’ve both got a lot to learn about parenthood and raising your baby to be the best he or she can be. Give her a jump start with a devotional about being a mom.

I’m about to start reading this one, and I can’t wait to learn more about being a godly mama. Plus, you can even get the accompanying journal!

8. Her favorite makeup or hair product

Remember when I said mama probably hasn’t had time to pamper herself in a while? That means she may not be feeling particularly pretty. Giving birth takes a toll on your body, and those post-pregnancy hormones can do a number on a woman’s hair and skin. Help her feel a little more like herself with her favorite makeup or hair product. If you’re not sure what that is, ask her mom or her best friend and I’m sure you’ll get some great suggestions.

9. Family time

We wrap up our list of Mother’s Day gift ideas with family time. This one is always a home run with me. I love spending time with my hubby and baby doing fun things. Plan a picnic in the park for the three of you (make sure to pack accordingly for baby; there are tons of fun outdoor activities to enjoy with baby). Or maybe take a day trip on a train. Go to the zoo or even just hang out at home doing whatever she wants. The important part is doing it together as a family.

Mama’s first Mother’s Day is super special. It’s not really about the gifts; it’s a celebration of all she’s been through this past year. Dad, take some time to tell her how much you love and appreciate her, and help her celebrate becoming a mom.
